Rebellious Rest
Pastor: Josh Miller
Date: 10 January 2010
Notes by: Robert Grandin
Scripture: Genesis 2:1-4
Sabbath: ``to cease or to stop''
The 1st thing set apart, called ``holy'', was time (the 7th day of creation).
What do we stop for?
- To experience grace. The 4th commandment is the longest and it deals
with the Sabbath.
- To embrace our limits. The core issue: who runs the universe, God or
me? We'll all die with unmet goals and projects while the universe keeps on
going. This comes down to trusting in God to keep things in order while I
rest and not feel as if the world will collapse when I stop.
- To surrender to God's rhythm in life.
- Letting go.
2 questions:
- What do I stop doing on the Sabbath?
- What do I do on the Sabbath?
Categories of rest
- Rest from work (school for students).
- Rest from physical exhaustion.
- Rest from hurry (rushing with no destination or deadlines).
- Rest from multitasking. The world expects and rewards distraction.
- Rest from competitiveness.
- Rest from worry.
- Rest from making decisions.
- Rest from catching up on errands/household chores.
- Rest from talk.
- Rest from technology/machines.
How would our lives change if we were to act on this? What would our lives look
like? How would our 6 days of work change?
