Ancient adoption

• cancellation of debt
• full rights into the family
• new blood relative

The nature of adoption

• brings tension (v.1-2).
• a solution to an unfortunate problem. It's a wonderful event, but it shows that a problem exists.
• Tip: remember the story isn't finished yet.

Adoption beings freedom

• We were slaves, now we're sons, how can we turn back to slavery? (John Stott).
• Saying ``I don't deserve'' is different than ``I don't desire''.
• One benefit is freedom.
• Tip: think of love/goodwill that goes along with the legal act of adoption.

Adption provides family

• Romans 8:16-17
• We get a spiritual family that is stronger than blood.
