A Sane Look at Greed
(Sane Living in an Insane World IV)
Pastor: Josh Miller
Date: 30 January 2011
Notes by: Robert Grandin
Scripture: Luke 12:13-21
The request: give me justice
- Rabbi's had legal (judicial) authority
- Requester had alreaded decided ``what was right'' and wasn't asking
for direction, just agreement
- Looking to use Jesus as a club, not as a leader
The warning: be on our guard
- We can't take-in everything without consequences (food, internet content,
movies, etc.)
- We don't (but should) do the same against greed
The problem: greed and overconsumption
- We must answer ``how much is enough?''
- The issue isn't productivity, it's excess
- Symptoms: storage and satisfaction
The deeper problem: not seeing our lives as on-loan from God
- fool (in the Bible): one who tries to live their life apart from God
(Psalm 14:1, 10:4)
The challenge: God will call in His loans. And that can happen at any time.
A few ideas to consider:
- Apply God's word
- Practice generosity
- Pursue contentment
